What To Do and Not To Do With Recycling
Recycling has and always will be a major topic in all our lives. Our environment is always a concern, especially with the recent rise in plastic pollution which is why it’s important for us always to be on top of our recycling. We thought we’d lend a helping hand and put to rights some of the misconceptions that arise when it comes to knowing how to recycle. Here a few do’s and dont’s.
DO Check With Your Local Council
Some councils and waste disposal centres operate differently to one another in terms of what types of recycling and waste they allow. So it’s always a good idea to make sure what plastics and certain items they allow before making it all the way down there. The way you check what type of plastic you have is by looking at the bottom of the product and determining it by the number next to the recycling side.
DO: Separate Your Items
When checking with your local council about waste disposal centres, it’s also best to check which recyclable items have to separate from one another. For example, if paper, glass, and plastic all have to go into different bins. Make sure you understand your local rules, so we can all be recycling the right way in no time.
DO: Recycle Your Bags
Plastic bags might be one of the biggest recent plastic pandemics that our generation has seen. The need to now pay for plastic bags or use reusable ones has helped with the reduction of plastic bags being used. However, plastic bags are still in production and being used whether you pay 5p or not. So, if you do end up using one it is best they are recycled in the proper way afterwards. There are bins, sometimes found at your local supermarket, that are for recycling your old plastic bags, as long as they’re clean.
DON’T: Bag Your Recycling
Never but your recycling in bin bags. When your recycling bins get sorted and separated the plastic bags can clog the machines and cost thousands to repair. There’s no need to use the excess plastic anyway because recycling can go straight into your recycling bins as they are, it’s actually easier to sort that way.
DON’T: Recycle Food
Food is more than capable to be put into compost and somewhat recycled that way. We’re just saying don’t put it into your recycling bin as it can’t be recycled that same way paper and cardboard can. Also, be careful to remove all food residue off containers before putting them in the recycling bin.
